My New Nimesis

In my many years of gardening I have faced many critters. We will all remember my love/hate relationship with the local deer herd on the Missouri farm. Not to mention the rabbits, ground hogs and moles/voles. Black snakes, coons, bobcats, coyotes, badger and those huge black snakes. Never will I forget the ticks and buffalo gnats. Well I have a new one. SQUIRRELS! Look at that little darlin up there. There are 4 baby ones that are in the tree right off my back deck. My yard is covered with them. They love them hickory nuts and big acorns off them white oaks.

I have a funny feeling that we are going to fight over my garden beds.

It got so bad that the dogs were constantly barking at the squirrels through the sidelights on the back door. I finally put gallery glass window paint over them so the dogs couldn't see the squirrels but the windows still emit light. I had to for my own sanity. The dogs still stand there and look through windows that they can't see through. Yep them are some smart dogs.

So now the dogs have taken the pursuit of squirrels to new heights!

I think them squirrels just don't know who they are messing with. Know that chicken pot pie recipe....It works great with squirrel!@

  1. CQ,

The squirrels used to come in and go after my tomatoes and strawberries. I put a stop to that with several bird nets over my garden beds. It worked, I even moved my bird feeders further away from the garden. Knock on wood, I haven't had any issues since moving the feeders.

  2. Oh yes, the squirrels here riffle through my beds constantly! And they taunt my dog something fierce! Hes only caught 2 in the 12 yrs weve lived here but they do have the haven of our 6 ft stockade fence. I have hated those things ever since I put in my beds.

  3. We use to have a squirrel that worked as an alarm clock. It became accustomed to a certain hour of activity in the kitchen while getting every one off to work and school. If there was no activity, it walked the wire to the house and fussed loudly until someone woke up.

I'm partial to squirrel and dumplings but that casserole looks great!

  4. Haha. We have squirrels all over here, too. They are a real pain come pecan season. They knock the green ones off the trees! They like the same ones we do. They won't settle for the smaller ones. And I'm sure the oaks put out plenty of acorns.

I've always wanted to try fried squirrel...

  6. Last couple of years we had problems with squirrels but this year we have adult cats and the squirrels don't like our yard anymore! I do like a good fried squirrel though and we ate a lot of it in Missouri!!

  8. They are so destructive! They try hard to get into my attic and they did up whatever I plant on my deck. I've tried sprinkling pepper in the pots but that doesn't work. :( blessings, marlene
