Sunday Fishin

Everyone needs some time off sometimes and we are no different. About this time of year O Wise One gets the fishing bug. After all man cannot live by gardening alone : ) Spending every day together it also allows each of us a little space from one another. That becomes very necessary for retired couples.

So on a Sunday afternoon you'll see O Wise One alternating between the farm ponds, local lakes and creeks and the river not far from our house. Each offering a little different opportunity. Above are catfish out of the farm pond.

These are catfish and carp out of the Grand River.

And these bass and perch out of a local lake.

And the great part about his Sunday fishing trips is that by the end of the summer I should have a nice stockpile of fish fillets to get me through the winter months. So when O Wise One walks out the door with bait and pole in hand I curl up under the quilt frame or in my easy chair with a good book and enjoy my alone time. Monday morning comes around soon enough and we both are back to the usual responsibilities of the farm. But for one afternoon we take time for ourselves.

  2. Do you have a secret to skinning cat fish? I have only tried once and was almost ready to give up and become a vegetarian. :-)

  3. Didn't know you could eat carp. Heard it was too bony. It looks darker than the others; it must be healthy. I just want to know one thing. How many people do you feed for the year with all that food? Do you use it all up or give some of it away?

    1. once I get enough carp saved up I am going to do a post on canning it in jars whick makes the bones melt.

I give alot to my children and grandkids. Sunday dinners and holidays always draw crowds. Share some with friends and family. Have been known to take care packages to elderly relatives of O Wise One's. Most of the time though it is just the 3 of us but we do try to produce the bulk of our food consumed. Not everything though.

    2. You're a good egg. I hope they all know how hard you work to grow it, harvest and put it up. Very hard work but rewarding. That will be interesting about the melting bones. I never knew that. I have canned fruits and vegetables but never meat. Don't know why.

  4. I was always told that you can't eat carp either, maybe it is the kind of carp here in WV or maybe it has to do with the size of the carp. Thanks for the tip on the vacuum sealer with the corn and prefreeze then sealing.

  5. We had fresh catfish for supper last night.

For some reason Hubby said it was difficult to skin. Any ideas?
