Gadgets Of Old

In my lifetime I have seen and used many different kitchen gadgets through the years. My favorite one however is this little gadget. Every year as a child my mother would bake pecan pies for every holiday. Pecans were always plentiful on our farm. My job was always to chop the nuts because she always liked her pecans chopped in her pies as apposed to halves that many use.

I would sit at the big oak farm table and feed pecans through this little chopper and turn the handle. No electricity used and no loud noises. Just a little elbow grease...

Like magic as you turned the handle they would fall out the bottom chopped.

I regret now never asking my mother where she got this little gadget. It says on the side that it came from France. I have never seen another one like it. Have any of you! Maybe I should introduce my grandchildren to the fine art of running this little gem. As I bake pecan pies for my Christmas get together I pull out this chopper for another year to chop my own pecans. No food processor for this task. I am instantly taken back to the big kitchen of my childhood and the smells of Christmas Dinner.

Does anyone else have any special gadgets from their childhood?

  1. What a great find, and it is still being used. I remember the meat grinder, and just some elbow grease. I have an old Sear Catalog and will check to see if I can find something like this in it! Merry Christmas to you and your family!

  4. Beautiful memories.

I have seen many nut grinders but not quite like this one.

It is wonderful that you still have it, intact with all the memories attached.

  5. My grandmother just had a little one that screwed on the top of a jar. I always enjoyed chopping the nuts, too.
    Wish I had hers.
Memories are great. You should indeed introduce your grandkids. :)
