CHEESE !

Hope everyone had a safe and relaxing Labor Day weekend. Ours was quiet with O Wise One cranking up the grill. He grilled some fresh veggies and BBQ goose breast along with chicken and we feasted and just took it easy. Tuesday morning we babysat for grandson Owen who is about 15 months old now. It took both Pawpaw and I to keep up with this little firecracker. That dirty face is a combination of allergies (runny nose) and peaches. You see the first thing Owen does when he gets to our house is scope out the fruit situation. Hmmmmm no blackberries, raspberries aren't quite ripe (yuck!), done ate all the grapes, Apples aren't quite ripe yet, plums are pretty well gone, Oh my!! peaches. Yep Owen should have some interesting diapers for the next day or so. That's mama's problem though. That is the price you pay for free babysitting.

Now Owen doesn't talk much yet but rather seems to do a lot of pointing and grunting. But we found a word Owen can say. CHEESE! What a ham.

Owen's favorite hangout is watching grandma quilt. He is absolutely infatuated and will sit there and watch me for hours.....

I am just finishing up this quilt that was left over from winter projects and have the frame in the dining room so that I can catch a few minutes quilting while I wait for pots to boil and pressure cookers to cool. Now my mistake was  putting strips in those log cabin blocks that have cows and chickens on them.  So Owen spent his time pointing to the chickens and cows and mooing and clucking to the particular animal that makes that noise.

I have to laugh at this photo! See that crack between those front teeth. That was my genetic contribution and that complexion.

Well Owen has returned home and I have lots of canning to catch up on. Tuesday night I had to peel and slice the peaches O Wise One and Owen gathered and start a pot of peach preserves. Most all those peaches had a mysterious bite out of them of the human variety. Wonder who did that? Pawpaw said Owen had to test them and make sure each one was ripe. I think I need to beat Pawpaw.

So Tuesday night  I put sugar and lemon juice in them and brought them to their first boil.

I'll spend the next two days bring them to a boil several times a day and then letting them cool until they are thick enough and ready to jar. These are the white peaches with the red stripes.

    1. Thank you for that wonderful compliment. I was probably in my mid 20's there.

  4. Such great pictures and precious memories being made! When we were little, my sister and I thought the best thing in the world was to sit and watch (and listen to) the grown women in our family stringing beans. They worked out of old biscuit pans resting on their laps. We couldn’t wait to be big enough to get our own pans piled high with half runners and our own knives to cut the ends and pull-off the strings. Some of the best hours of our lives!

  5. I am so glad you have shared your technique of making preserves without pectin. We have been wondering how to do that with much less sugar than most recipes call for and without pectin. Thank you, CQ!
