As most of you know I rarely buy commercial cleaning supplies. I simply do not think they are a necessary expense as I can usually make something of my own that will do the same job faster and cheaper. Glass cleaner is no exception. I use this cleaner on not only my china cabinet glass but also mirrors, windows, doors and stainless. On my stainless it seems to help repel those finger prints. I simply mix this and keep in a squirt bottle but once it sets for awhile you will have to shake it as the corn starch wants to settle to the bottom of the bottle. Just give it a good shake to redistribute all the ingredients and you are ready to go.
Glass Cleaner
1/4 cup rubbing alcohol
1/4 cup white vinegar
1 Tbsp corn starch
2 cups warm water
1 tsp laundry bluing
And my favorite thing to use other than old newspapers is my microfiber cloth for glass.

ReplyDeleteBluing is a laundry additive that is put in the white rinse water to make it brighter. I rinse my blue jeans in it as well to keep them from fading out too quick. I also rinse my black dogs in it to make their black hair really shine. My mother rinsed her gray hair with it to prevent that yellowing that you sometimes see in gray hair. Look in the laundry aisle.

DeleteThat's the first mention I've heard of bluing since I was a kid. Since I'm almost out of window cleaner, I am adding that to my grocer list. I've made my own laundry soap and have added a couple of things to my list so I can make my own fabric softener. You all are teaching us some valuable lessons! Yes! Linn Valley, Ks got some much needed rain over night. I am envious of your gardens this year! We have so much shade here with all the woods that our garden is only producing herbs that I've been using and dehydrating. Thank You and keep it coming!!!
ReplyDeleteI use nearly this same "recipe" - with the cornstarch but without the bluing. Found it on the internet so long ago, and have even made it with the wintergreen rubbing alcohol for a fresher scent ;) I wonder what it is about the cornstarch that seems to help it work so well?
ReplyDeleteLike you I tried this years ago from an internet recipe and the cornstarch made a huge difference.I love it on my stainless as it somehow seems to repel the fingerprints for a little while : )

ReplyDeleteI tried this recipe for glass and stainless steel this morning after finding Mrs. Stewarts Bluing in the grocery. My experience: Good on mirrors. Good on some but not all stainless steel. My Dishwasher cleaned up ok (Miele) but my GE fridge/freezer did not clean well and left splotches which I had to go over with my original stainless cleaner and was relieved the blotches came off. I think you have to be careful how you use the spray bottle too as the overspray droplets leave blobs of blue below, but at least you can spot it and wipe it up quickly. I now spray only on the cleaning cloth rather than directly on the surfaces. I think I'll try it on windows next. I am always looking for good alternatives to store products, so I do appreciate you posting the recipe.
ReplyDeleteFascinated that it cleaned different stainless steel differently! Since all my stainless was bought at the same time and is all by the same manufacturer it cleans it all the same including microwave, dishwasher, fridge and stove. It also works great for me on both mirrors and windows. Maybe try putting a little less bluing.
