Escape Artist

O Wise One came through a couple days ago with a hangdog look and announced he had escaped rabbits. Seems he had unlocked the door and walked away for a minute and they made an escape. He managed to catch them all with the dip net with the exception of this one little gray guy. Baby O had named him EDGAR. Seems Edgar has taken up residence under the chicken house and is waiting them out.  My solution is the shotgun. Sorry ladies but I am a true gardener and a loose rabbit is asking for trouble.

The last time Baby O had this happen she was 8 and her daddy brought in a little rabbit from a nest he had ran over with the lawn mower. She put her wild rabbit in a cardboard box only to wake up the next morning and it had not only gotten out of the box but ate an entire tray of tomato plants I had sitting on the floor awaiting planting the next day. I was not amused and they were both in the dog house. The next night I had live traps set up in my kitchen trying to catch a small rabbit that was slinking around my house in the darkness (probably looking for more tomato plants). Needless to say the new rule was no more rabbits (or any other wild critter) in the house. Someone has to be the voice of reason in this crazy family. They finally did catch the baby rabbit years ago and he was returned to the wild. His great grand bunnies are probably eating my beets as we speak.

As for Edgar I'll keep you updated!

  1. This is funny, but not funny as I know how you feel about your garden. Keep us updated of Edgar's demise, whether he makes it back into the pen or into the stew pot!

  3. I hope they find Edgar before you do! I don't blame you one bit. I have Armadillos & Squirrels that just dig stuff up (all my beans & some of my garlic & even tomatoes). Most of the time they just take a bite & leave the rest. The cats will chase the squirrels but just look at the Armadillos like, "there is no way I can pierce that armor, so I'm not even gonna try"!

    1. OMG we had armadillos in Louisiana and boy are they destructive. My boys used to go over to their grandpa's when they were younger and hunt them for him and shoot them. They did so much damage to his orchards.

  4. Hope you catch your errant bunny. Prepper a shot one on Thursday night who was eating our blueberries, and another one on Saturday night, who was eating our raspberries. We're calling her 'Dead Eye' these days. She shot them both with a BB gun (pumped 10 times) ...one shot each. She's pretty handy to have around. Sorry your backs hurting. Get better soon.

    1. Well bless Prepper A's heart! My own daughter can shoot but when she killed something she would have to be hospitalized from the heart break. Her Dad took her deer hunting one time when she was about 6 and she sat in the deer stand and sang to the top of her lungs the whole time. She just wanted to warn all the little deer : ) That child does not have a violent, aggressive bone in her entire body. She is a dead shot with a bow and arrow and has the medals hanging to prove it as long as she is shooting at targets.

  5. I'm with you on getting rid of the varmints, even the soft cuddly ones!!! We have a 6 ft. deer fence with rabbit wire at the bottom around our over sized garden. When The Backhoe Man takes down the end fence to turn the garden, a rabbit will occasionally get in and hide in the blackberry bushes. He closes the gate and in a month or so, things are nibbled off and that's when my faithful Jack Russell is invited into the garden. I praise and applaud her each time she brings me a young rabbit. Haven't had any in the last two two years. Her reputation must be spreading among the rabbit populace!!!!

    1. Ya gotta love them terriers! They cannot be beat for rodent control and I would be lost on my farm without them. Before I had the scottish terriers I had a little rat terrier named "cricket". She looked like a little cricket bouncing around but she could clean a barn or feed room of mice in minutes.

  6. This morning we had 2 yearlings come right up to the back of our house for breakfast. So far they left what garden we have alone! Rabbits don't come around because of the foxes and coyotes. Mama coon brings her 3 babies up at night to finish the cat food. They all seem to live in harmony and not bother us or each other. Maybe I should knock on wood! Our most interesting escape artist was the injured snake my daughter brought home. She thought I could heal anything. Of course it got loose in the house. Thankful it was only an 18 inch long garter snake. Finally found it in the hall lying under the edge of the laundry basket a few days later. Did make us feel a little uncomfortable. The boys never did anything like that. Rain is coming again tomorrow ... we've had a wet eastern Kansas this year.

    1. My oldest had pet snakes in the house! Loved them. I don't mind the wildlife as long as they aren't in the house and stay out of my garden. It's hard to be a gardener this far out in the woods. We have lots of foxes, coons, badgers, bobcat and even an occasional mountain lion but we still have an abundance of rabbits. Some years are worse than others. Rain is supposed to come back for us tomorrow evening as well.

    2. We ended up with 3 Severe Thunder Storm Warnings and a Flash Flood Warning yesterday afternoon and evening. My 8 little lemon trees I tried to start 2 weeks ago have drowned twice now. Guess next lemons I buy I will try again. We are so surrounded by woods, it's hard to have any kind of garden. My husband said he would build me a small greenhouse before fall. I'm sure I could do better with that because the area will get lots of sun when the leaves fall. My few broccoli plants kept producing even thru out spring snow storms, but not enough to do anything with except add to vegetable powder when it came out of the dehydrator.

  7. I have to find this post familiar and somewhat humorous! I have several rabbits that hang out in my yard...my husband has suggested sending them to rabbit heaven, but I am a softy. So far the garden is ok. Guess we will see.

  8. Little Edgar looks so unassuming. ha! Maybe a cat or fox will find him.

  9. Edgar, however cute, could quite quickly become quite the nuisance! My mother is a rabbit fanatic (of them alive, not cooked) so it's something we've avoided mentioning, that we plan to raise meat rabbits when we have our farm. Edgar is a cutie, though. Hope he either is caught, or tastes fantastic!
