The End Of The Season

With August in full swing and Autumn right around the corner garden cleanup has started. This is our third corn planting. It didn't fill out very well due to drought conditions and sweltering heat. What corn it did make we are pulling one or two buckets at a time and feeding to the chickens, turkeys and pigs. If we get it out in time we may plant some field peas to plow under after frost to compost all winter .

The stalks are pulled as we go and stacked up.

One crop of field peas are pulled up and the peas shelled for seeds for next year and dried beans for cooking if necessary. They could also be ground for chicken feed.

All three compost bins are full now so we have started making compost stacks in the garden. Layering organic matter such as bean plants and corn stalks. We add to that what we clean out of the goat house and under the rabbit pens. Also the straw bedding from the animals.

These stacks will help keep the weeds down and retain water in the soil beneath. Not to mention enriching the soil as they break down and the manure adding nitrogen. We simply garden around them for now.

In 8 to 10 weeks we will be putting this garden away for the winter but for right now we are still harvesting and enriching the soil for the nest growing season.
