Well I am back. Sorry to be gone for so long but as my mother used to say I have been busier than a one armed paper hanger. Baby O won 4 blue ribbons at the county fair yesterday evening. Two in cooking, one in arts and crafts, one in entomology. Granddaughter Graci won 3 so we had a successful fair all around.
I have been canning all day. Freezing up beans and squash from the weekend and slicing and blanching today's harvest for the freezer. I will bag them tomorrow.
Today picked tomatoes, squash, cucumbers, okra and zucchini. Chicken broth cooked down from scraps and will can tomorrow. Picked more onions for storage.
We unplugged the incubators hopefully for the year. We have one hen turkey remaining on the nest that we will allow to complete her hatch if possible. Now we will concentrate on feeding out and butchering most of the 41 young turkeys that we have hatched this year. Some will go in the freezer, Some in jars and the remainder will be kept for breeding stock. We will save two to feed out for Thanksgiving and Christmas. I have 11 baby chickens that will replace my older hens which will be butchered for meat and broth to put in jars.
Temperature today 102.

Congrats to the fair kids! Way to go. Sounds like your homestead is hopping..I just ordered turkeys for the fall and my replacer hens just started laying!
ReplyDeleteIt was pretty close to that temp here, today, too.
ReplyDeleteDo you ever sell chicks?
Have a question about compost piles. Do they have to be in sun or can they be in shade, too?
We want to get some compost piles started here.
Thanks for sharing everything with us, CQ. :o)
Mine are in the sun but I try to keep them moist and covered with tarps to hold in the moisture.
DeleteThank you, CQ! :o)
DeleteCongrats to your daughter and granddaughter for placing in the ribbons!
