Sweet Potatoes

After planting my sweet potato slips in my garden this year it turned off really dry. To help these young starts out I put plastic milk jugs with the bottom cut out over them and stuck a stick through the jug to keep them from blowing away. We watered them 3 times a day through the top of the jug. The jug helped to hold in the moisture and protect them from the wind and strong sun. After about 10 days they were ready to come out from under the jugs.

They had put on new leaves and were off to a great running start. Now if we can get enough rain we are hoping for a good crop. In the past we have lost atleast a third of the plants when we set them out. By using the milk jugs we didn't lose any. The most important thing is that they stay wet.

  2. When I read title I thought, harvesting already?!!! I knew the season was off but then I read. This is a wonderful ideal.

Mom and Dad always used many ideas like this and were quite successful. I like the coffee can trick to keep the rabbits from eating the young cabbage.
