Daily Farm Journal

Saturday Evening June 23, 2012

We are off this evening to Baby Hank's second birthday party. Grandma and Grandpa bought him a great big yellow Tonka dump truck to go with his new sand box and a soccer ball. We are going to enjoy fresh fried fish with all the trimmings over at their house and birthday cake. I am sure it will be lovely.

Worked in the garden early this morning for the first time in a couple days. It was cool and cloudy and just couldn't resist. Although my back is still sore it is getting better.

Gypsy my little girl scottie dog had to go back to the vet and has pneumonia. So today we started on round 3 of antibiotics. She is a very very sick little dog and had we not took her in the vet said she would not have lived through the weekend. Her breathing was terrible. Third vet visit this month UH!

Picked the last of the green peas and pulled up the plants. Seed saved for next year and stored. Unsure if we will plant a fall crop or not.

Pulled up one row of green beans that had stopped producing. Composted plants and will probably plant fall horticulture beans in the space.

Got more rain today. Started about 10:30 and rained on and off all afternoon. Just a really slow soaking rain. Maybe 1/2 inch. Thank You Lord!

  1. Hi, Canned Quilter! You're so lucky that you got some rain today. Black clouds all around here in KC and not a drop. I've got a question for you. I planted Contender and Blue Lake bush beans this year. How long do they usually produce? Do you ever succession plant right away or is it too hot in the summer for them? Forgive me, I'm a newbie.

    1. When my beans quit blooming and very few small immature beans are on the plant out they go. I panted two rows this spring and just pulled one up and hope to pull the other up as soon as my back allows. We have picked them 4 times and it is time. But I already have a row to replace them planted last week. That will take me into the fall with fresh snap beans. You can plant them clear up until mid July for fall beans and be fine in KC. Sorry that you got no rain : (

    2. That's really helpful, thank you! My beans are starting to yellow and not producing as well. We've picked them 4 times also, so maybe it's time to yank them and start again. Thanks again for your help and I hope you are staying cool. This weather is a doozie, for sure.

  2. I am jealous that you are having fish. I know it was good.

    Happy Birthday to Baby Hank!

And thanks for the information on peas and beans, too. Glad to hear you got a bit of rain. ♥
