The Year Of The Hosta

Remember the violent storms of last summer. It seemed like I lost a tree a week there for awhile. The big maple tree had a complete ring of Hosta all the way around it.

Once the tree was gone the Hosta started to scorch from too much sunlight. So I had to dig it up,divide it and move it or lose it.

Then the voles attacked the big Hosta in the south wing wall bed and just devoured it. They ate almost all the roots. So I had to dig it up. So what did I do with all that Hosta. I divided it and planted it in the part of the garden that we were no longer using because the trees along the fence line were shading that part of the garden out.

So now I have tons of Hosta so I think I'll be making beds around the bases of some of those big trees around the garden. It's feast or famine around here.....

A gardeners work is never done!

  1. CQ, Is there anything you can do about the voles?

    1. About the only thing that I find that works is a good cat. Although for the last two years I have been seeing more and more of the little garder snakes and I could not tell you the last time I've seen a vole. They drive my dogs crazy though (the snakes)..

  4. I just love hosta they are difficult to grow here in the part of Texas I live, just to darn hot even in the shade. I have one in a coal bucket I have kept a live several years. If ever I live in a cooler climate I would have them everywhere! We do not have voles here but we have moles and they are just as destructive! We have had to line all the bottoms of our raised gardening beds in the garden with wire as they were eating the roots off so many vegetable plants grrrrr.
