Sprouting Sweet Potatoes

I started my sweet potatoes this week. I just placed 3 sweet potatoes in jars of water with toothpicks pushed in the potatoes to hold them straight in the jar mouth. I should see roots in 4 or 5 days and sprouts in about 2 weeks. Once the sprouts are long enough I will show you how to remove them from the potato and root them. I hope to have slips ready for planting by late May.

I found this on Pinterest and found it interesting. This lady starts hers in soil cut in half and placed on the soil in old recycled bread containers. I might try one this way just to see how it does.

Anyone else started their sweet potato slips yet?

  2. I placed my sweet potatoes in a basket, in my kitchen cabinet where it's dark. Now this particular cabinet has a heater/air conditioning vent at the floor making it cozy in the cabinet. Now all of my potatoes sweet and regular have roots on them. There all ready to be planted. I'm going to place them in my garden, on top of the dirt and place straw on top of them. I seen a program on youtube where they just sat the potatoe on the ground and put straw on top and they had beautiful potatoes. So, I'm giving it a shot.

  3. Just coincidentally! I just planted (in my greenhouse in 4, 1 gallon pots) the sweet potato slips cut with pieces of the same sweet potato that I had noticed a couple of months ago sprouting in an open basket on second shelf of my kitchen cart! LOL!

I had taken that potato out and placed it in the north facing kitchen window with its little sproutings and just left it there! Nothing else! It was there looking at me the day I was planting tomato seeds in the gh and I said, "Aw! I'll see what we can do with you, too!" I cut it into 4 sections and planted them sprouts and all. So who knows what they'll do now. I would have put them into larger containers but that's all I had on hand. I will watch and see. You never know, I might have a gift of 4 sweet potato plants I hadn't planned for.

I know I'll have to find larger containers or transplant into ground or straw? Anyhow I hope yours do well! :D

  5. I would, but I need to find some, haha. I think if I use store ones, they probably won't taste any better than from the store.

Interesting idea with the little bread pans. May try that one myself. :-)

  6. Thanks so much for this post. I need to start some pretty soon--I've always bought them but need to be more frugal on how I get my garden going. Both ways look like a good idea!

  13. Hello everyone!
It's now almost Dec. 1st! Whew! Most of you should have already had your potatoes harvested and put up by now. Please let me know how it went. I have some sprouting in my laundry/pantry room. I would like to try the 1/2 slips in the bread pans. My biggest concern is the dark red variety I bought at the local grocery store earlier this month for Thanksgiving. Can I use those or will they not turn out as well. I'm very interested in trying to do long term storage so need some pointers. Thank you.
