Canning Implements

Amazon Link for this set

After doing my carrot canning tutorial I had several questions about tools. Above is a link from Amazon.com for a starter set for water bath canning which is a great place to start. This set is made by Ball. It includes the following.

A funnel for filling hot jars
This tool has a magnetic end to lift those hot  lids out of the hot water without burning those finger tips
This little tool has a dual purpose. One end is for releasing trapped air bubbles from your jars
The other end has a handy set of measurements to help guide you as to how far your food is from the rim of the jar.

These are for lifting hot jars to either place in or take out of your pressure cooker or hot water canner

Although not in this set the Ball Blue Book is probably one of the most important tools you need to can food. It includes instructions and recipes for canning almost anything. And the new ones also have info and recipes for dehydrating and freezing also. If I were starting new to canning I would follow this closely until I get comfortable with the skills than you can branch out and try different recipes and skills.

Above is a link to the Presto pressure cooker that I own. You can buy it new on Amazon for $81.54. There are more expensive ones out there but I have used this one for 20 years and the only thing I have ever had to replace are the rubber gaskets which I buy at my local Ace Hardware. And I have used the heck out of it.

There are other things that are necessary such as a good set of heavy pot holders, some large pots for boiling water and a large colander are really helpful But most of us already have that in our kitchens.

This post is aimed at all of you newbies to canning. Anyone who cans please feel free to add to this list.

What canning supplies have I forgotten that you use regularly during your canning?

  1. I use all but that little gadget to release the bubbles, will have to look for that.

  2. The pressure cooker can be used for canning, but a pressure canner (confusing) can not be used for cooking food. Is that right? (I don't understand the difference, really.

My canner (which I have only used once for my disastrous pickle escapade), came with a rack, but not the basket that that one came with. I will need to practice more with the bubble releaser. How do you know if there are bubbles in the middle?

Practice makes perfect, I think. Happy Monday, CQ! :)

  3. I loved the little gadget to measure head space and to release bubbles. I have all the tools except that one so I didn't want or desire to purchase the whole kit. Amazon sells the this little tool separately. Here is the brand name: Norpro Canning Bubble Popper & Measurer and they cost $4.20

Love your blog! One of my new favorites. Happy Canning!

  5. I just took my pressure canner lid in to have the pressure gauge tested before starting in. Also ordered a new seal. Mine is just like yours, and is at least 20 years old! I think it important that new canners know that not all foods can be canned in the hot water bath. Mostly fruits and low acid foods I believe. Nothing like getting a NEW canning book and reading up! Love your pictures and am hoping to use your hints on planting my tomatoes this year. Hope it works in Oklahoma!
