September Gardening

I don't know about the rest of the country but here in Hickery Holler the nip of fall is in the air.We again are opening the doors and allowing in that cool fresh air. Temperatures are hovering in the seventies during the day. At night we are again snuggling under our quilts with the windows open. Those 40 degree nights are wonderful and we are lulled to sleep by the howling of the coyotes in the distance. The vegetable gardens are winding down fast and our days have been filled with harvesting and putting by the last of our summer bounty. It makes for long and tiring days but the end result is worth it when the snow starts flying and we have lots of vegetables put by. While others are feeling the results of those food price increases we enjoy our home grown vegetables on a daily basis and the feeling of knowing that we have produced what we are consuming : )

Can you believe those Laura Bush Petunias are still growing and blooming? I love those things and sure hope they reseed for next year. They even smell nice.

We are going into September with plenty of color with these giant sunflowers. Not sure how much longer until the birds find them. These are planted along the fence of the chicken yard to help provide shade during the hot hours of the day. Eventually they will become chicken food.

These Italian Pickling Peppers are still loaded with peppers.

And those huge heirloom Cracker Jack Marigolds.

And smaller marigolds along the porch.

We appreciate the remaining colors and the ability to throw those doors wide and breathe fresh air and the relief of not running either heat or air conditioning because we know that too soon the landscape will look like this : )
