Canning Overload Disorder

We all know I suffer from OCD (Obsessive Compulsive Disorder) and I didn't even have to self diagnose. Just ask any of my children as they remind me of my malady on a daily basis. They know when they set down a glass on the counter and return 5 minutes later to finish the drink only to find the drink dumped and the glass in the dishwasher. Or the 20 times a day I wipe the kitchen counters. Or straighten the table cloth or placemats. Yes indeed that's me.

Well I have found a new condition that I am suffering from.

Canning Overload Disorder!

This malady is self diagnosed.

You can read about it here....

I have all the symptoms plus some.

Yes my kitchen looks like a produce stand exploded in it!

Yes my back and legs ache like I am 8 months pregnant!

Yes I hear popping jar lids in my sleep!

Why do I do it? I look at those stacks of veggies and I just can't throw them out or give them away. I hear my Depression era parents saying " Hard times are coming" and " You might wish you had that one day " . So I can and I can and I can. My mother also suffered from this condition. I remember as a child shelling butterbeans for days it seemed like. I remember helping her can mountains of tomatoes, beans, pears and figs and anything else she could grow or gather from the woods. Have you ever tasted wild huckleberries or wild mucadines. Or how about mayhaw jelly!!

Although I must say they ( my family) eat it all plus some. I don't hear them complain when they pull that chair up under my table. Or my grown children abscond with my goodies. Indeed.

My second son says that when the zombies come and the world ends like in the movies he's heading to mama's. That's where all the food is..

What would I do if I didn't can or garden ?

Hmmm....

Maybe read a book, or sew or quilt.

But instead I garden and can. It's in my blood. Almost a family legacy. That's why when I remodeled my house my walk in pantry is twice the size of my walk in closet. Lol

  1. Sure wish I could sympathize with you this year:) I have yet to can a single jar of anything this summer as our garden has been so poor. I gave up on it a long time ago. I do have pantry plans for some year that would allow cupboard after cupboard of homegrown homecanned goodies if I can just sweet talk Rob into starting yet another project around here!

  3. Loved this post! I don't can no where near as much as you do-but what I do get done-makes me feel so good and like I am prepared for the future-no matter what it is.

I'm so sorry about Rosie. When we're down and out or sick-sometimes it seems our pets understand better than people.

  4. Oh, my goodness! I loved this, I have canned a little bit of everything that could be canned too! Right now my shelves won't hold another thing. My husband laughted at me last Sept. when we went on vacation because I used my mad money to buy canning jars that had been reduced to almost nothing. I called that a great bargain; you can never have too many jars! I really love your blog; will be going back and reading your older posts.

  7. I love this post!! My nephew says the same thing about my pantry. Canning is in the blood of that I am sure, I can't stop canning and where I am somewhat new to it I can't help but try something different each year to expand the know how. My great grandmother canned 1/2 gallon jars in a 55 gallon barrel that had been cut in half and put over a fire. She had 11 kids at home and she had to feed them. I like you remember being a child and sitting till my back side was sore from shelling out peas, birdegg beans and what have you. I hope my love of canning continues on through my kids and on down the line!!
