The Whistle Stop Cafe

Today I thought of one of my favorite movies.

Fried Green Tomatoes!

Who can forget this scene?

[Evelyn is cut off in a parking lot]
Evelyn Couch: Hey! I was waiting for that spot!
Girl #1: Face it, lady, we're younger and faster!
[Evelyn rear-ends the other car six times]
Girl #1: What are you *doing*?
Girl #2: Are you *crazy*?
Evelyn Couch: Face it, girls, I'm older and I have more insurance.

O Wise One brought me in some goodies today. There are still portions of the gardens that are somewhat protected by trees and such where plants are still producing despite frost. I got cucumbers, green tomatoes and squash.

So for supper I took out some pork chops to bake, sliced some cucumbers and put them in the fridge to chill. And made these.....

Fried Green Tomatoes...

(And squash for Baby O because she doesn't like green tomatoes)

First I washed and sliced the green tomatoes and squash

Then I dipped them in a milk and egg combo and seasoned bread crumbs then placed them on a baking sheet that I had coated with Pam
( You can also use olive oil or cooking oil)

Then you spray the tops of the tomatoes with Pam to moisten
( You can also put a couple dabs of butter on top)

If you don't put something on top they will be dry and not crispy !

Then place in a HOT oven! I set my oven to 450 and bake on top shelf.

Bake for approximately 30 minutes or until golden brown

And there you have it

Fried Green Tomatoes

(and squash)

And yes they are crispy !!

And the best part is no frying.

Because I am concerned about your heart health !

Just call me the Whistle Stop Cafe

And the menu is baked pork chops, fried green tomatoes, sliced cucumbers, and asparagus.

And for desert

Pecan Pie

ya'll come on by and I'll set an extra plate for dinner : )

  1. On my way!!! I'll bring the fly wine!

  2. Whoa mama, that sure looks delicious. I'm goin to keep that recipe in mind.I love fried green tomatoes and those would fit the bill without frying
without using a lot of oil (or getting splattered). Are you sure your not "O wise one"? :o) Ginny

  3. Now you've made me hungry! Looks so yummy! Thanks for the recipe. :)

  4. One of my favorite movies! Love fried green tomatoes; never tried doing them in the oven I've always fried mine. Definitely gonna try this recipe next time I make them. Have a great weekend.

  5. Wow they look so darned good!! Idgy(sp?) would be so proud of you!! lol! That's one of my favorite movies too! My favorite part of the movie too!!

I will have to try those maters baked!

  6. That looks really good! I really like the way you did the "fried" green tomatoes ... I don't like how the coating burns in the bottom of the frying pan when you're doing more than one pan full. I'm going to try your oven fried method.

  7. Never thought of baking them-but I will now : )

  8. Thanks for the receipe idea.. I love "fried" green tomatoes and squash too... but always hate the frying part so I don't make them much.. now I have no excuses.. Yummy. Love your blog, too.
