An Early Summer Harvest

I think gardening in boxes has worked. I seem to be picking a steady supply of green beans. Those Jade bush beans that we have grown forever.

Not by the bushel but simply a couple cookings at a time.

And life goes on. Growing a smaller garden to fill a smaller pantry of my smaller home. Thankful for it all and the ability to do so.

  1. I like gardening in the raised beds because of weeding as well, or I should say no weeding :O). I only get a few weeds and they so easy to pull out because the soil is always loose.

    1. Same here we love the lack of weeding involved. No tillers no weeds and when the gardens around us are swimming from all the rain of late ours drains beautifully.

  2. We will definitely be gardening this way next year. With all the rain we've had in North Texas this year, our sandy soil garden has nearly washed away and has been replanted several times.

  3. CQ,

Nice harvest for raised beds and you get a comfortable amount to can for putting up in the pantry.
O'Wise One looks like he's having a good time harvesting.
Are you all settled in your new place?

    1. We are settling in nicely. Lots of small projects planned for the future. Upgrades and improvements to landscaping and we want to install wood floors in the house at some point. Enough projects to keep us old folks busy for a few years : ) Hugs CQ

  6. Sounds like the two of you are adjusting well to your downsizing adventure, C.Q. I'm glad you hear you are enjoying it. Your raised beds look great!

  7. Glad to hear from you again and to see you up to your old tricks. I wonder if you'll plan on putting up enough food to eat for the two of you from now on or if you are going to cut out the canning bit continuing on in your downsize/cutting back goals. I seem to remember you having plenty of beans and canned goods to hold you over this year and you'll continue in the future?

Glad all is going so well for you! Happy Summer!

    1. Nothing replaces having fresh vegetables. I think as long as I can lift a seed we will always grow and can, just not 1500 jars a year. There is just no need. My mother passed with an entire garage full of canned goods in her 70's and still canning. I do not intend to be my mother. O Wise one's mother died with 1 jar of canned beans left that she refused to eat because it was the last jar that she had left that her dead husband and she had canned together. She was 84 and he had been dead for almost 15 years. I hope to be somewhere in between.

    2. That's pretty good. Although, I do admit I may have been like your mother-in-law who saves that last jar of bottled 'us' beans...that is, if my husband helped me do the canning! ;-)

  10. I might do box gardening next season. My garden really got away from me this year. I was in the middle of starting a business, planning new house construction, and then a relative got down and I had to spend a lot of time out of town. My garden really suffered. A box garden would definitely help with the weeding. Now, to work on all the other factors! Sigh.
