Spring Is So Fickle

We woke up this Sunday morning to thunder and rain hitting the metal roof.   Yesterday was a beautiful 80 degree day here in the holler and O Wise One and I worked in the garden planting more potatoes, lettuce, greens and more peas. I killed my first wasp in the house and saw the first little black ants in the house of the season. Last night I picked off my first tick. It's official I am declaring spring has sprung. Daffodils are blooming everywhere. I had forgotten all the places I had planted bulbs last time I separated daffodils. I think every clump is blooming. They are in flowerbeds that I have not cleaned up yet. Popping up amongst the brown of winter killed perennials. They are drinking in that warm spring rain of April.

They are tucked around small trees and along fences and walls.

They are growing around stumps and under rose bushes and they just keep spreading with a little help from me.  Truthfully I had forgotten that I had planted that many. They are reminding me and I think every bulb grew. But the weather man is reporting a possibility of snow next week. So I think as soon as it quits raining I will be picking some giant bouquets and bringing them inside to enjoy during the snowstorm. After all we can't waste good flowers on snow.

Remember last year it snowed the first of May here in Hickery Holler and we worried for the fruit crop but as usual we had plenty as always. If one crop fails it seems like the others compensate and the good Lord provides. There are a few blossoms just starting to open on the plums so we will see what happens. The potatoes and peas aren't up yet in the garden so it should not hurt them. Just another fickle spring here in the Midwest and in Hickery Holler.

Hope everyone is enjoying this rainy Sunday afternoon.

Blessings from The Holler

  2. I picked my first tick off of one of my boys the other day. Ridiculous. Only the crocuses in bloom here. I worked out in the flower beds this weekend and must plant my peas pronto.

Here is a question for you. I had a fabulous potato crop last year and was so pleased. UNTIL mid-winter we had a rat infestation whose main meal was our potato crop. How do you store your potatoes to keep them protected from vermin? We had ours in metal mesh baskets off the ground by cinderblocks down in our cellar. Would love the help. I am so discouraged I don't even feel like planting a single potato this year.

    1. Containers inside homemade rat wire baskets or boxes. A good rat dog. My scottish terriers will kill a rat in a minute. The other thing is a good cat. Rat terriers are great too. Vermin are common problems with root cellars. We also have lots of garter snakes and other non poisonous snakes around the farm and they help keep them down also.

  5. CQ,

I'm happy to see you back, I hope you're feeling much better.

Beautiful pictures of you daffodils, are you expecting cold the beginning of the week where you're at?

  7. It's so nice to see color other than brown isn't it? My uncle always says it's not spring until it snows on the daffodils (or as we call them....buttercups...but i think a buttercup is actually another flower. oh well :) )

  8. Woo hoo...so glad to have you back! Sending up prayers right now for your continued recovery. The beautiful blooms from the dogwoods, yellow bells, and cherry trees are fading fast in NC, but the rose bushes are covered in little buds and it won’t be long to the first rose! Happy spring!
