Happy Birthday to the Puppy Pile : )

My two little mutts were a week old yesterday. Pulled from the womb of a dying mother, the only survivors out of a litter of 9. These two were miracles from day one. With their hope for survival extremely low it has been a challenge. There was no mothers milk to give them a good start, only me, a heating pad and a bottle.

I refused to give up and let these two die after their mother gave her life for them. I have gotten up every two hours for the last 7 days to warm bottles and feed these two. I now have such an appreciation for mother dogs. My gosh humans are a cake walk compared to these little squirming things. I have never wiped so many little poopy puppy butts in my life.

I haven't been posting much so please be patient with me. I will try to keep up......but sleep deprivation is a terrible thing : )

With cleaning the house for the upcoming holiday, processing venison, keeping up with laundry and preparing to cook a holiday meal it has been a massive job. Thankfully everyone has chipped in for poopy puppy duty. You know the drill.......warm the bottle, feed the puppy, burp (yes puppies must be burped), then wiping their little bum with a warm rag to make them poop. The mother would use her tongue( EEEUUUWWWW!!).

I may need a vacation by the time they are weaning age......

  1. Congrats to bark-bark puppy mom! How many weeks do you have to do this? 6, 8? I am so glad they are surviving so far. Have a happy Thanksgiving! I'll patiently wait till you have time to come back here...knowing you have your hands very full!

  3. I meant to comment before, but I definitely want to say that I think it's wonderful that you are fostering the little ones. I know it's a lot of work, but what a giving and beautiful thing you are doing. I just think it's great.

  5. *big grin* I can totally relate. When I was raising Patience (wonder how she got her name?!) my daddy mentioned that the momma cat has to lick their butts and wondered how I was getting her to poop. I very calmly replied, "You lick her butt!" You should have seen his face! It would have been worth a mint to have a photo of his expression! It still makes me laugh thinking about it.

  6. If you did not post until after Thanksgiving we would all understand. The pups look a good size, but that could be that 'extra' 10 pounds the silly cameras always add. I showed my dear hubs your photos from yesterday. He will not be having his usual venison with turkey this year...but I was able to get some local bison steaks. A wee bit over $13 per pound! Ouch!

I do hope you and your family...and the pups too, have a wonderful Thanksgiving.
    blessings, jill

  9. When I rescued a day old kitten I went through the same thing. I got my dog to do the poopy part and she was willing. I was grateful. :).
