No Tricks Just Treats

As we all woke up Tuesday morning and turned on the local news with our morning coffee the pictures started to show up of the devastation left behind by hurricane Sandy. Our heart goes out to all that sit in darkness and to all that have lost not only loved ones but property as well to Sandy. Coming from coastal Louisiana I know hurricanes well and the fear and destruction that accompany them. You are all in our prayers. For those of my regular readers on the east coast and especially the northeast please leave a comment and check in for me. I'm a worrier : )   Heck everybody just check in if you want and tell me how Sandy impacted you!

So with my mind on the storm and it's aftermath I decided to spend the day in a little kitchen therapy. Knowing Halloween was Wednesday I decided to bake my little ghouls some fresh cookies as goodies. We don't really get many trick or treaters but the few that I do get always get homemade treats and they usually always show up year after year.

I threw some home grown sweet potatoes in the crockpot

Went out and picked some turnip greens and a few turnips when I picked up the eggs that morning.

Threw on a pot of field peas

And made a skillet of crusty buttermilk cornbread. And with all this we will have pan cooked bass caught from our pond this summer.

I spent the day just tinkering in the kitchen and listening to some quiet gospel music. Cleaning out the fridge. Making salad dressing for the week.

And making Halloween cookies. These are called buffalo cookies and you can find them over at Mennonite Girls Can Cook blogspot.  Go over for a visit cause them mennonite girls sure can cook!

What kind of treats are you giving out today ?

  1. No treats to be given out tonight. Because of distance and darkness, we generally don't have kids coming to our door. I will however, make some oatmeal cranberry cookie for the guys at home.

  2. No trick or treaters here. We live so far back even the adults are afraid.

    Happy Halloween!

  3. None at our house either. Even at our City House, we are on a dead end dirt road & the only neighbors we have, their kids are all grown.

B-T-W, if I haven't said so before ... I love your cover photo.

  5. I am a long time reader but rarely comment. Living in eastern pa we got hit hard by Sandy. Flooding, high winds that took down many trees on our property and did some damage to our roof, plus we haven't had power in 3 days. Luckily we have a generator and otherwise survived the storm unharmed. The woodstove keeps us warm and the massive amount of food from our garden keeps us well fed, just requires creative cooking.
Thank you for your thoughts and prayers.

  6. South central WV and the wind wasn't too bad but we did get over a foot of snow up here on our mountain! Kids had a great time but it's on the way to melting. No power since Tue. a.m. and the phone's out also but no big deal for us which is a good thing because you don't get out when it's like this. I'm thankful for our wood and coal stoves for heat and the generator to run occasionally for freezers and computer time. Praying for those who lost so much.
