Canning Caramelized Onions

I am always looking for new canning ideas and recipes. Recently I found this recipe on Pinterest and wanted to try it.

I found this great tutorial over at Canning Granny Blogspot if anyone is interested the link is below.

It tastes wonderful and I think this will be great to put on steaks or burgers coming off the grill or really just about anything. We love caramelized onions. If this recipe keeps well I may put up some of my homegrown onions this way. For right now I bought 10 pounds of Vidalia onions at my local grocer.

I used 6 pounds of onions in my crockpot and it made 9 half pints of onions. Great idea and recipe from one canning granny to another. Thanks !!

  1. I used that recipe from her site last year. Mine did not keep :O(, every jar got what I assume was mold in it? I don't know if I did something wrong or what. I will be interested to see how yours keep for you! Its the only recipe I have found thus far for canning caramelized onions.

    2. The fat from the butter will solidfy and make them look to have white splotches on them.. or at least mine did that.

  3. I made a batch of these last week and man did the house smell good. Hubby kept sniffy the air (he loves fried onions and potatoes, French onion soup, well basically anything with onions).

I used a jar on top of a casserole I made -- pasta topped with hamburger, these onions, and cheese.. oh man was it good!

  4. I made two batches last weekend and put them up. I didn't use butter I used a little olive oil because of my husband high cholesterol. We haven't opened any of the cans, so I hope they hold up.
