Making Kitchen Necessities

Making potholders was one of the first few posts I posted on this blog almost 2 years ago.

I made these for my kitchen. After 2 years of hard cooking and canning they are pretty well shot. They were getting thin and terribly stained and January was a perfect time to replace them. Those long gray days and early night falls was the time to sit in my chair while the grandbaby was napping or the laundry was drying and take a few minutes for myself each day to just unwind and crochet. And in those few snatched minutes each day I was able to create something that I will use everyday for many years to come.

These I made a little larger than the last ones because many times I use them under casserole dishes to protect my tables and counter tops and wanted something larger. These are good thick double thickness heavy duty potholders.

So far I have 4 done but will continue to work on them during the winter. If you'd like to crochet along you can find the pattern here at My recycled bags.com  . This is my go to pot holder pattern. A great simple beginner pattern with just single crochet, double crochet and slip stitches. A great simple pattern for those of you just learning and a wonderful site for lots of simple patterns and green crafting. Next time you need potholders or that shower gift consider making your own. Don't forget to use all cotton thread for potholders.

  2. I love the colors. I also like the cotton crocheted dish cloth...a pure pleasure to use.

  3. I remember making potholders from those little square metal looms that they had when I was growing up.
I kept the loom and loops at my grandmother's.
I'm going to book mark your link and maybe I'll learn to crochet one day. :)

  6. Thank you for this post. It inspired me to learn how to crochet left handed on the internet. I can now single crochet, double crochet, and slip stitch to make potholders to replace my old ones. I've also made one for my sister's birthday and need to make some for my Dad. It's always nice to learn to make your own "necessities".
