The Rhubarb Patch

Nothing goes together better than strawberry and rhubarb. I had never had rhubarb until I moved to the Midwest. I guess it doesn't grow in the south because it requires a certain amount of cold weather. Oh my gosh we never knew what we were missing!

I had started out with just 2 small hills of rhubarb. I had purchased 2 crowns and planted them in a flower bed to get started. I lost 1 hill of rhubarb and they just didn't seem to like it there. So I knew it was time to find it a new home before I lost it all. After doing some research I found that rhubarb likes super rich soil. So when son in law helped extend the strawberry bed this spring I decided to make a small rhubarb patch at the end. Amending the end patch with lots and lots of rabbit manure in the hopes of getting the small rhubarb plants off to a good start. I dug up the one remaining crown out of the flower bed and split it into 9 small sections each with a good amount of root with it.

In the picture above you can see the small rhubarb plants at the end. (top of picture)

The new section of strawberry plants in the middle section did not fill in like I had hoped so I dug some runners from the existing strawberry plants and replanted and mulched the new plants hoping they will have enough time to get established before a hard freeze.

But as you can see the rhubarb plants love their new home. Those 9 little separated root pieces have now covered the bed. And in just 1 season. Wow ! I hope to see a lot of rhubarb pies in my future.

  1. That is awesome! Rhubarb is on the list of perennials we want to get established. I can't believe yours grew so much in just one season!

  2. Lordy Woman you scared me to death this morning! I came over to your blog to see a complete redesign and I thought I was on the wrong blog. I hit refresh twice, checked the address bar and then scrolled down looking for your picture to confirm I was in the right place. LOL

ok back to the subject at hand.... rhubarb. My granny grew a HUGE patch and I can remember stalks as long as your arms on that thing and just so yummy!

Now these some years later, I have my own rhubarb bed going (not from a start from hers -- that would have been sweet thing to have). Mine is still a young'un in comparison to yours and hers. We planted it one area on the property and it didn't like it much. We transplanted it last year to near the compost pile and main garden and it loves it there. Hopefully it will start branching out more and more and I'll have a big ol' patch of it in the years to come. I do love me some Strawberry Rhubarb Pie, Strawberry Rhubarb Jam and recently made a Cherry Rhubarb Skillet Pie (yum!).
