Picking Out Pecans

The first of the pecans that we picked up have come back from the crackers. We have a hand cracker but it is cheap to have them machine cracked and that leaves us more time to work on picking them out.

We take the pecans to them in the next little town over and they have a machine that cracks them and they go into paper sacks.

O Wise one and I sit at the table in the evenings and pick them out. I then go through them picking out the whole ones to go into bags in the freezer for baking. The pieces are then put in separate bags for pecan pieces for baking also. The dark ones or ones that are no good go in a bucket with the shells which are then put outside on a little wooden table for the birds. The cardinals , blue jays and woodpeckers will pick through them for the little bits and pieces of pecan meat. From there the remaining shells go into the compost. Nothing goes to waste!

The pecans in the freezer will go into cakes, pies, brownies and cookies through out the year. We eat what we grow here on the farm and it is nice to know that our harvest will only improve as our young trees continue to mature. Maybe eventually even creating a small income for the farm every year. The investment years ago in those young trees of not only time but also money is finally paying off.

  2. i never thought of paying someone else to crack them. That might be something to look into. Thanks for the tip! :-)

Do you ever give the shells to your chickens so they can pick out the bits of pecans? or is that mostly a wild bird offering?

    Happy New Year! :-)

  3. Those Pecans look delicious and a good size. Wish we had thought of planting Pecan trees instead of ornamental Pears!
It's too late in our season to make the change :o(....Ginny

  4. I bought a large bag of whole pecans and they were all about the size of the end of my thumb or larger.

My intent was to use them in cooking. I had wanted to make some pralines.

I wound up eating them all. Go figure.
