Domestic Tranquility

It's mid morning here in the Holler. Fall is in the air. There is a crisp cool breeze. I have abandoned the air conditioner this morning and thrown open the windows and doors. I know there won't be many more opportunities to enjoy the mild temperatures in the upcoming months. I think that when I moved to the North that the confinement of winterwas one of the hardest things to get used to. When the thermometer hovers at zero it is hard to get motivated to leave my warm house.

But today it is still warm and I sit here in my rocking chair in the dining room looking out the old screen door. My grandson Hank sits in his baby swing next to the rocker watching grandmaw work.

He is amazed at the thunk of my snap beans as they fall in the metal dishpan. O Wise One picked these this morning and it should be enough for about 1 cooking or 7 quarts to add to the pantry.  The old radio plays softly in the kitchen, an old country station out of the little town not far from here. Riley the little black scottie dog is curled, napping, at my feet.

The kitchen smells of fresh apples brought in this morning from the tree, and cinnamon and butter as my apple pie bakes in the oven.

The laundry already on the line flaps in the cool breeze.

In the distance I hear the roar of a motor as O Wise One mows the grass down toward the woods.

I am content and thankful. People often ask if I get lonely living this far out in the country.  Not really! I came here with the man that I love and we have made this a home. Raised a family, built a house, tended the land. Our hair is gray and we slow now. All the children are gone but one. But this is still home

Life is a journey they say. The journey has been long and hard, but alas I am home. May you all find such contentment and Love !

Blessings from The Holler

  1. Sounds like a bit of heaven and contentment at your house right now. I'd love to sit on the front porch with you and visit a while! Bet those apple pies smell heavenly, my mouth is watering already!
