It's early May and the garden is coming along. It is too wet to really do much in it but the cool weather crops are flourishing. Above are green peas grown around wire rings for support. We continue to have rabbit problems and O Wise One is going out at dusk everyday with a gun.
This year I ordered new strawberry plants and pulled up the old ones. O Wise One made me a new bed with railroad ties and compost. I find that every 4 or 5 years it is best to start over with new strawberry plants. These are only about 2 weeks in the ground and are coming right along.
The cabbage and broccoli have done real well. Thus far we have not lost any but we continue to watch for insect damage. We have had to put wire rings around all temporarily to keep the rabbits away.
We continue to harvest lots of asparagus. Some is frozen and I have made 2 batches of pickled asparagus plus casseroles and I have a new asparagus soup recipe I want to try.
We are looking forward to a little less rain and warmer temperatures. Once the weather stabilizes a bit we will start planting the warm weather crops.

Brilliant idea for the clinging pea vines!! I've never seen them growing around cages before.
ReplyDeleteYou must really have a problem with rabbits. And there ain't nothin' wrong with Rabbit Stew.....
I was just going to ask if you had tried frying the rabbits or something. Though in Alaska when we were there in the 70s, a lot of the rabbits couldn't be eaten safely.
ReplyDeleteI love your garden ideas! I may try that, too. Do you use regular fencing for the cages, and do you plant anything inside the cage?
Though you did say it's still pretty cool, so you possibly do not.
Anyway, thank you for sharing with us. :)
