Plantain Oils And Salves

The bugs are terrible this year! I am not sure if it is because of the mild winter temperatures or early spring but they are thick. I am particularly sensitive to bug bites and always have been. So this spring I am experimenting with making some homemade salves and cures to help get me through the long summer months. I always have a healthy crop of plantain in my yard and outlying pastures which is supposed to be great for bug bites. So I picked some and washed it well. After it was dry I cut it into small pieces with scissors and added it to a small jelly jar.

Then I covered it with olive oil. I am going to let this sit till June. Once the bee farm  in the neighboring community starts harvesting their honey in June I always buy a gallon or two along with fresh beeswax. I hope to mix this oil once strained with beeswax to make a medicinal salve for my bug bites and skin irritations.

I also want to experiment with doing this with Mullein leaves and flowers as well.

Anyone else make their own salves, tinctures, flavorings and cures? I would love to hear about them ! Especially those for bug bites..

  1. Our old stand bys are vanilla. Sweet cream and baking soda make a good paste for poison ivy.

  2. The only bugs we've been bothered with are the sandflies. But, if they get to biting too much, I just slather on some olive oil. They can't bite through the oil and I keep my skin moisturized. Like I really need to in this rainforest : )
