Cylindra Beets

While out and about in the garden I notice that my Cylndra beets have gotten to a pretty good size. Not all of them but if I let this hand full go till the others size up I am afraid they will turn woody. (hard and stringy)

So I picked them and brought them inside and am making a small batch of pickled beets .  You can find my go to pickled beets link under my canning recipes. I love this heirloom variety of beet. With it's long cylindrical shape they make perfect slices for pickling and have a smooth and sweet taste.

I get my seeds for this from Everwilde Farms Inc. One of the few seeds I do not save. I have bought seeds from them for years. They sell native wildflower and heirloom vegetable seeds. Some of the best prices and quality out there. No this blog is not monetized. I receive nothing for any product I recommend to you. If I recommend anything to you it is because I like it and use it myself. Nor are there ads of any kind. Just me and my own big mouth here.

  1. Oh, I love pickled beets! I lost my husband's grandmother's recipe and have not tried another recipe. I will check out yours. I am going to sow another round of beets as my first sowing did not do well. It's the first year of growing in this soil and it's all a learning experience.

I also want to thank you for being ad-free and "just me and my own big mouth". I will take you and your experiences and opinions over slick advertising any day!

    Happy Fourth of July!

  3. I have not heard of this kind of beet. I'll check them out and give them a try! My main goal for growing beets is pickled beets and beet jelly. Growing some that are easy to slice but give a big return, would be a total win.

    Thanks for the info!!

  4. I canned a few jars of pickled beets last weekend. We grew some in the big family gardens last year, but they aren’t ready yet so I found some that were the perfect size at the farmers market. It always amazes me how few jars I get lol! I only got four pint jars this year, but that’s better than the three I got last year lol! I like to take the extra brine, either from when I make them or when I finish a jar, and add shredded purple cabbage or onions and let them pickle in the fridge. It’s really tasty on tacos and things!
