Plagues

Been busy canning here in the holler! Lots of cucumbers, squash and zucchini. Twenty jars of green beans about a dozen quarts of squash canned. Made a gallon of refrigerator pickles just to munch on.

Tomatoes coming along, field peas are loaded, just starting to pick okra and then........

Here come the locusts

And how about some torrential rain fall. About 3 inches in an hour!
And some hail to go along with it

And not some wimpy hail either

How about some golf ball size hail

We have floods, storms and pestilence here in the holler!

We will pull up the squash, green beans and zucchini and see what we can salvage of the rest. Guess it is time to plant that fall garden.

We are ever thankful that everyone is safe and there was little damage to vehicles or structures. We are thankful for what we have already received. We will clean up and plant again and see what new gardening adventures await. Our larder remains healthy and we will not starve but it is discouraging.

Blessings from The Holler

  1. Boy do I feel your pain. It's rains so much that we've had three trees fall, roots and all. We're fighting fungus in the garden and Mosquitoes while in the garden. When the sun doesn't shine it seems like every bug is on steroids. But with the bad there's always the good, and that would be we've a bumper crop of peppers. So I used your recipe for stuffed banana peppers this week. This weekend I'll be stuffing bell peppers and canning whats left of the turnips. Sending a little sunshine wish your way!

  2. CQ,

We went through the same thing not once but 4 times, each time I replanted my garden. Hopefully, you'll be able to pull some veggies off of the plants you've pulled. Stay safe, this weather has been crazy.

  3. Oh they are trials and look how well you've weathered them! Hubby and I like to look back and say "this would have really got to us 35 years ago!" Now we just go along, we know it never stays the same!

  4. CQ, I am sorry you lost so much of your garden. This has been a weird year. We, like Sandy, had so much rain we had to replant over and over. My okra is just now about 15 inches tall and is still spotty in some places in the rows. I planted and replanted beets this spring and only got 5 pints from all of them. I am getting ready to plant fall crops as well. It is reassuring to know you have plenty on the shelf, isn't it? I hope your fall crops do well.

  5. Eastern NC has been hot and dry. I planted 25 tomatoes and 8 eggplant, lost every last one to some kind of virus in the soil. My neighbors lost all of their tomatoes also. Green beans and okra okay. It was so hot that the blossoms all fell off the peppers, maybe the new blossoms will set now. Disappointing summer garden season, time to plan for fall!

  6. I see that this is happening all over the world, and it reminds me of a word that I have been constantly reading in scripture. Endure, or Endurance. It makes me think that the Lord is preparing us to learn, and practice it. The economy is not doing very well, so what better way to get that lesson into our souls, than to practice it.
It is the best teacher, and if we are going to need it, then so be it. I thank God that he showed me recently to just change gears, by purchasing market veggies, and either freeze or dehydrate them. I hope to grow a fall crop too, but I will endure and "change gears" when, and while I still can. I pray we all have a wonderful fall crop, and that we have the patience and endurance to know, that the Lord is always with us. No matter what happens.

  7. We've had a lot of rain over this way so our garden looks like a jungle from the weeds. Thankfully, we didn't plant much this year though, just things that needed to be replenished.

CQ, you know you are just about an hour's drive from me now, if that!! We should try to meet up sometime now that you're closer to this ol' crazy gal in the South. :)

  9. Sorry you lost part...I have not even gotten one in this year due to work schedule (I went from stay at home mom to full time outside of the home) and daughter #3 getting married. So, since you moved from Missouri to the south...what type of fall garden would you recommend for those of us still in NW Missouri?

    1. My standard fall garden in Mo was turnips, sometimes I could get a second fall crop of cucumbers, mustard greens, lettuce and sometimes broccoli.

  10. The torrential rains of spring stunted our tomatoes from the get-go though now things seem to be rolling along alright. I have a question for you regarding turkey. I roasted one up the other night to make some space in the freezer and I have quite a lot of meat left. I'd like to can it in some soup with potatoes and veggies or with rice but I am not sure if that is possible. I searched your site and found a recipe for turkey and broth so I will definitely do that- but have you ever made soups that are ready to just dump and heat for lunches? Is that something that is okay to do?

    Thanks!

  35. She was on Pinterest the middle of January of this year. I believe I read somewhere along the way that she was going to back off the blog, but leave it up for reference. There is a Pinterest board for Hickory Holler that has a lot of things from here on it.
