Busy Hands

With less house to clean and mowing and gardening to do I have begun to do more and more needlework.  I am trying to rebuild a stockpile of gifts. A handmade scarf makes a great birthday or Christmas present. Maybe a matching hat to go with it or mittens.

The scarf above is my first completed knitting project. I have been learning off of you tube videos and a book I purchased.

I love this one made with super soft yarn with just a modified Half double crochet stitch.

And a couple extra pot holders and I want to crochet some scrubbies and dishcloths to match and maybe sew a couple dish towels in a coordinating color. Wouldn't that make a great housewarming or bridal shower gift.

And for those baby showers and great nephews and nieces coming along a couple of these stashed away wouldn't hurt.

I also want to start crocheting some baby hats, socks, booties and blankets for a local charity organization called Newborns In Need. They make baby items and donate to the needy, shelters and hospital neonatal wards. It is so hard to buy items for those tiny preemies that fit and they also provide burial clothes for God's littlest angels. Those tiny babies that are still born or miscarried.

As I restock my homemade gift stash I'll use those extra bits and pieces to make those tiny baby hats and booties with the leftover yarn and hoping to run across some sales on baby yarn to stock up a stash for this my newest endeavor. I also have a couple baby quilts to quilt too.

But those busy hands projects keep me out of trouble and off the streets and goodness knows I need it.

  1. Keeping off the streets is a GOOD thing...LOL!! I've been thinking about learning to knit, too. I have crocheted for years, but quilt most of the time now.

  2. I am always doing something with my hands, cross stitch, crochet, knit, hand piece quilts... Theres always some kind of needle in my hands when the chores are done. Idle hands are the devils playground and all.

  5. As a mother of a newborn who passed away recently, I thank you for your kindness and generosity to such organizations. However, not all babies who pass away are tiny. My daughter weighed 9 lbs 7 ounces, and the dress we were given to bury her in was tiny, no way she would fit in it. Luckily my Aunt was able to make a beautiful dress for her out of my wedding dress. And my neighbor was kind enough to crochet a nice hat for her also. So, maybe make a few hats a bit bigger? Beautiful handiwork, many will be blessed!

    1. Thank you Jade for pointing that out and I am so sorry for your loss. Having never really experienced losing a baby I guess when we think of still born or miscarried babies we always think of the tiny ones. I will keep your suggestion in mind and will make some regular newborn sizes. Blessings

  6. Lovely needle work. I have made items for our local hospital and I use the patterns on this web site for bereavement gowns, hats and all kinds of baby items. I have also made some kid size hospital gowns for a friend whose little girl with spina bifida required repeated hospitalizations. I put naps on the shoulders for monitors and a ruffled front pocket which I have been told is really loved by the little girl for carrying a stash of special little things. Here's the site for free patterns for charity use: http://www.bevscountrycottage.com/

  7. I have lost my infant son and niece. My son was born prematurely (and tiny), but my niece was full term. Both of them spent time wrapped in blankets made by someone such as yourself. I can tell you that, because their time was so painfully brief, I can remember every stitch, the colors, and pattern of those beautiful blankets. At a time when the baby is surrounded by machines, having a handmade item means a lot (especially when you weren't expecting the early birth and are unprepared). We only had one chance to hold and cuddle him, I'm glad he was wrapped in love. Somewhere in the future, there is a family that will never know you - -and yet never forget what you did for their child. <3
