Nothing Goes To Waste

After finding grapefruit on sale and canning the sections I still have two containers of peeling left over. I love the smell of grapefruit and buy grapefruit fragrance oil all the time for my homemade cleaners. The smell of citrus bring back such wonderful memories for me. I lived in Central Florida when raising my oldest three children. We had huge grapefruit trees in the backyard and there was nothing like grapefruit fresh off the tree for breakfast. Back in those days there were hundreds of acres of citrus groves. I returned to the area a couple of years ago
and was disappointed that all the groves were gone to be replaced by strip malls and housing developments. What a loss..

So instead of buying grapefruit fragrance oils to add to my vinegar based cleaners I just decided to add grapefruit peelings to my vinegar and let the fragrance transfer to the vinegar. So I trimmed most of the white pith off.

Cut it into chunks and added it to a couple of quart jars of vinegar.

I am going to let it sit on my counter for a couple weeks and then strain the peelings out and use the vinegar for my cleaning solutions.

If this works I may do some orange and lemon as well. Won't my house smell all citrussy and wonderful ?

And then I added some grapefruit peel to a small jar and added olive oil and placed it in the crockpot with about an inch of water in the bottom. I turned the crockpot on warm and just let it warm all day. Oh my the olive oil smells wonderful. Just like grapefruit and I am hoping to use this to make a batch of soap.

The jar next to it is mint!

  3. This is a great idea. I dehydrated chunks of organic orange peel this year to put in my scrub cleanser (baking soda and borax). It was worth the time to do it.

    Thanks for the great info!

  5. What a great idea! When you say cleaning solutions, do you just mean the vinegar with the citris added to it?
