One of my favorite skills is quilting. I make mostly traditional quilts pieced on either my grandmothers treadle machine, my mother's circa 1940 Singer electric or my own modern machine. All of my own quilts are hand quilted on my mother's cypress floor frame.
Ohmyword! I love them ALL!! I thought I was the only one left in the world who preferred hand quilting over machine quilting! Yep..I piece them on the sewing machine..but the quilting is done by hand on my frame. HOW COOL IS this!! Love it love it!
ReplyDeleteyour quilting is beautiful. Thanks for sharing. :)
ReplyDeleteyou have beautiful quilts. I remember when I was young once a week I would play with other children while my mom quilted with her friends. I wish my mom would have had time to teach me how to do more quilting. Thank you for sharing.
ReplyDeleteThanks for sharing your quilts! I admire your talent so much! I make clothes and other items but I've never been good at quilting, so after looking around for a fabulous quilt for my bed for ages, just invested in a handmade quilt today! The quilter who made it is very talented, like you. I'm happy to be able to experience the fruits of quilters' labor even though I can't quilt straight!
ReplyDeleteLove your quilts and the hand quilting. I'm working on quilting by hand now. Getting even stitches is hard.
ReplyDeleteYou have inspired me to try to finish a project ...... I have been a sewer for most of my life (I still have the first simple project I made on my mom's machine when I was 4) but I have never had the desire to do any quilting until recently.
ReplyDeleteI have had a quilt top tucked away for years wondering what to do with it. It is a hand-stitched quilt top, made by my mothers grandmother. She finished one just like it as a wedding present for my mom when she married in 1945, and gave this one to my mom to finish, but she never did.
It isn't anything fancy.... not the prettiest to look at but it is a bit of family history. Pretty sure the pieces are cut from scraps of worn out clothing, no rhyme or reason to colors or weights of fabrics. I knew I did not want to finish it and have it machine quilted..... so, anyway now you have me thinking that I can hand quilt it.
Would it be an awful idea to divide it and and finish four separate pieces to be framed as gifts to my children? It would be their great-great grandmother that made it.
Jan I have a piece of an old quilt that belonged to my motherinlaw. It was finished off around the edges and a sleeve sewn on the back. A small wooden dowel was then inserted through the back and she had it hanging on the wall. Come to find out It was the last quilt that she and her siblings had that was made by her mother dating back to the 1800's. So they cut it into 4 sections and each child took a section. My mother in law had made a wall hanging with hers. Yes it was somewhat tattered but she treasured it never the less. A memory of a mother no longer with her.
DeleteThanks .... I had asked another quilter about splitting it and she looked at me like I was about to commit a crime. :-)
DeleteI will have to look at it and see if there is a good way to divide it.... I hope it will be treasured by girls.
I have really enjoyed looking at your quilts. That is something I have always wanted to do. I promised myself that after I retired I would be making a quilt. My great aunt made beautiful hand quilted quilts. Here I am three years past retirement and still no quilt has been made! You have certainly inspired me to try and get that done.
ReplyDeleteBeautiful work! Love your quilts.
ReplyDeleteYour quilts are beautiful. I always do the hand quilting on all of my quilts. I'm told that most send their quilts out to be machine quilted, but I enjoy the hand work. You inspire me with all your quilting, canning and the farm animals.
ReplyDeleteI love your bed . . . it looks like mine. Ours is Amish made and we have an 8 drawer wedding chest to go with it. These beds just beg for a beautiful handmade quilt to grace them. Love your site. We have recently purchased a 63 acre farm in Middle TN and hope to have a bit of what you are doing in the future . . .
ReplyDeleteIt was so fun looking at your wonderful creations. And even though we are clear across the country from each other, I felt a kinship as I saw fabrics in your quilts that I have used in mine! Your blog is a continuous source of entertainment and encouragement! God Bless and keep you all!
ReplyDeleteBeautiful quilts. I was surprised because the quilt on top looks very similar to one I been making for years. It also blue and has the pink center. It was from a Quilt in a Day booklet. (I did put the pieces together in one day, it's the rest that has taken me many, many years.) I want to hand quilt it but I don't have a frame to do it in. How big is your floor frame I found an old pattern for a frame that I can use but not quite sure on a size. I don't know if you will get this but I would appreciate an answer. I think it's about time I finished it. Thanks.
ReplyDeleteThose are just gorgeous!! I've never pieced a quilt with small pieces of cloth but made larger squares and made 3 if I am remembering right. I found one at a thrift store someone made and bought it. It was only 1.00 because it needed some work around the edges since it was raveling. A family member of mine saw it and said it was from old flour sacks which made my whole day. I am trying to find some pale yellow to fix the edges with now. Don't like the thought of using new fabric on an old quilt, just doesn't seem right for some reason. Anyway it has cotton in the quilt for the batting. Just sooooo cool! LOVE LOVE LOVE quilts and I have said ONE DAY I am going to piece one together and quilt it. ONE DAY! :)
ReplyDeleteI see you haven't posted anything new in awhile. Of course my internet has been down for periods of time on and off. Hope all is well with your household. Change comes and we roll with it, right? It is cold here in Southern WV...an artic blast I think is what they are calling it. We have had drainage issues on the farm and have a huge ditch in the back yard. That will get taken care of this spring. We had to replace our septic this past summer and thought we were going to have to replace the furnace but it is still running for now! Can't wait until spring to get outside and get in the dirt! Warm regards from one country girl to another!
ReplyDeleteAbsolutely gorgeous!
