I recently restocked on vacuum bags and just in time for corn and fish season. For those of you looking to save money on those vacuum bags I have ordered my last two batches from
If you use lots of bags to store your winter food the price can't be beat and so much cheaper than those boxes or rolls of bags you buy in the grocery. I got 250 quart bags for right around $80 with shipping. They work great on my foodsaver machine and I hope last me through to next summer. You can also find oxygen absorbers and mylar bags here as well. Thanks to katzcradul over on YouTube for the heads up on this source of bags!
These days with O Wise One's Sunday fishing trips I think he is going to need lots of bags.......
Our winter should be full of crunchy oven fried fish and oven fries. Now all we have to do is dig those potatoes.
Yesterday I spent several hours in the tomato patch cutting the tops out of tomato plants and pruning them to help the plant concentrate on ripening the fruit that is still on the vine. I am hoping with warmer temperatures predicted for the end of the week that it will help them to ripen. It has been so cool that they are ripening just a few at a time now. I got one nice picking a week or so back and now they are just trickling in. That cool weather is nice for the gardener but hard on ripening fruit. We also have an unidentified critter eating ripe tomatoes, my guess is a possum! This weeks project. Kraut........
And onions for the freezer and horticulture beans. O Wise One cleaned out the big chest freezer yesterday and reorganized it. So today he is butchering roosters.
I am baking burger buns for the freezer.

We ended up covering our tomato plants with netting this year due to a critter helping itself. We would go out and find big chunks out of the ripe tomatoes. It turned out to be a squirrel and we had no idea squirrels would eat tomatoes. We've never had that problem before.
ReplyDeleteLooks like O Wise One has been very busy fishing. Those fish look delicious.
I have been wanting to try the recipe for the burger buns and freeze some, but have been really busy. Maybe when our son goes back to college and summer winds down, I will have time :) They look so good!
ReplyDeleteCQ,
ReplyDeleteThank you for the website regarding the Food Saver bags.
Do you order item SSV4R0812 ?
I've been looking for a replacement for the expensive rolls, and would rather deal with the individual bags.
That's them. I ordered the gallon too and they are great for corn on the cob!
DeleteMy tomato patch looks like a Christmas tree with lights on the strand out! So slow going. And yes the cool weather is great for us but not the plants. Couldnt agree more!
ReplyDeleteThanks for the source for bags... I've got loads I got from Ebay but you never know when you're gonna need more. Love Katzcradul.. Shes the bomb & one of my top 5 You Tube channels.
ReplyDeleteI saw a rascally chipmunk take off with one of my cherry tomatoes in his mouth a couple days ago.. While it was really cute & funny in one way, I wasnt too thrilled about it. I've been seeing a pair for a while running around my little lot. I may have to find a wrist rocket one of these days..
This is the first year I've ever made sauerkraut and Im so thrilled with it.. but I'd love to ask you a question.
When you make large quantities of it.. when its done, what do you do with it? Leave it in the crock? Refrigerate? Freeze? Can? Thanks!
To Can: Drain and wash Sauerkraut and bring to a simmer ( I added new brine) in a large saucepan with enough clean brine to cover slightly. (180 degrees) Do not boil ! Pack hot sauerkraut in hot jars and add brine to cover. Leave 1/2 inch headspace. Remove bubbles and seal hot water bath pints for 15 minutes and quarts for 20 in a hot water canner.
DeleteThank you so much! Have a great day!
DeleteGreat post, again!
ReplyDeleteI love reading your posts, I want to be you when I grow up. :)
ReplyDeleteMy questions are:
1) Do you re-use your vacuum bags after you cut them open?
2) If so, do you just hand wash and hang dry?
Thanks!! I am excited to see photos of this year's garden, when you have spare time.....Hahahaha! What is that, right?
