Busy! Busy!

Just a quick update today because I am busier than a one armed paper hanger right now.

Baby O and I picked 4 five gallon buckets of purple hull peas yesterday. So my job today is to shell and can them. Some of the peas will be retained for seeds. Baby O is working today so I am on my own. Most mothers  bond with their teenage daughters over a shopping trip or such. Baby O and I had a nice visit over the pea patch.  And the squash, cucumber and zucchini patches too!

O Wise One is pulling up the Purple Hull Pea patch and the first patch of Jade green beans. That leaves 2 patches of Jades at different maturity levels remaining. One is strictly for seeds. The 6 rows that contained the peas and beans will be tilled today and spread with rabbit manure. Then O Wise One will replant the 6 rows with English peas for the fall.

We  also picked onions yesterday and those will dry for awhile and then be sliced and dehydrated for winter.

And on top of that my computer is on the UPS truck to be delivered today : ) : ) : )

So if you lose me for awhile I am trying to hook it up between all this canning and gardening. I may call in the cavalry and get the two girls to hook it up for me simply because they can do it faster.

I have 2 weeks worth of pictures to down load from the camera and a new Windows program to learn.

So if the Good Lord's willing and the creek don't rise I'll see you folks tomorrow!

Blessings from The Holler

  1. You are lucky your daughter likes to help you in the garden. My kids moan and groan about how they had to pick with me when they were younger. After being flat on my back last week with a disc problem, and having two wrecks in the last two months, today I will be shelling peas and making pepper sauce and feeling terrible about my driving mistakes.

    1. Oh I don't know that it is at the top of her lists of likes YET but I think resigns herself to the reality that this is our lifestyle and wishes to be a part of that.

  2. All that wonderful fresh food. It's a lot of work but the rewards are unmeasurable. You are probably eating healthier than 99% of the world. Your garden and county-side photos are marvelous. I love visiting and strolling through your charming blog :)
    Your blogging sister, Connie :)

  3. Do you shell the peas before they get dry? Or let them stay on vines to dry and them shell and save for seeds?

    1. I like to shell them while they are still soft for canning and then let some dry on the vine for seeds : )

  4. Always call the cavalry when you can, especially when computers, digital devices and cell phones are involved.

  5. You will probably have windows 8 and I am really not a fan of it. They just keep updating and making new programs so we have to BUY more to keep our computers running... LOL!! I know your faithful computer died a dreadful death, but mine is struggling along to the tune of 'your browser needs updating'.

My second planting of Jade beans is really taking off. Purple hull peas are almost ready. I love shelling them... very soothing and relaxing.
