Can you believe it is mid August and I am still picking spring broccoli. This is a hybrid called Premium Crop.
Look at the size of these heads.
Tall sturdy plants with large heads and lots of later side shoot production and heat tolerant. Premium crop has been a winner for me. And I have fall broccoli coming on too!

Yum! I love broccoli.
ReplyDeleteThis year I have made a few points to try a couple of new things for our food storage.
I've tried a new method of breading okra for freezing. Slice, bread and bake at 350 for 20 minutes. Cool completely and bag as usual.
I've tried my hand at pickling okra. I'm sure I'll be the only one to eat them, but that is okay. I'm learning my tastes count, too. :-)
I've also canned my first ever slices of green tomato for fried green tomatoes. I had one jar that didn't seal and I've tried them. Not too bad. I guess the actual test will be after they sit for a few months though.
How did your okra do as I may have to try that!
DeleteWhen all my children were home they could eat a quart of pickled okra a day. My oldest grand daughter Julian is the same way! I don't make as much as I used to because I don't see them as often because they all live so far away . I will usually do a few jars every year so that i have it when they do visit : )
I have never canned green tomatoes for frying either. We don't eat them very often.
The okra seemed to dry up a little, which is what I was after. In a few weeks I'll pull some out and fry them to see how they do. I want them to have time to be frozen for a bit and see how it affects them.
DeleteI also have a friend who just sliced hers and dehydrated them. She said when she rehydrated them and breaded them to fry they were great. If I can lay my hands on a few more I'm going to test that, too.
Normally I dry blanch my okra in the microwave then bread and freeze on baking sheets. Then add to bags and back to the freezer. I may play around with doing it your way too. I have to wonder if it dries it out too much if it would make it tough?
DeleteI have dehydrated okra and used it in gumbos it is great except all the seeds fall out! LOL
Yummy! I have been craving broccoli like crazy. My son loves it too.
ReplyDeleteWhere did you get the seeds for the kind you grow? I have had issues with my broccoli bolting as soon as it gets hot. I am thinking of trying the kind you use.
Like you I have had issues with broccoli. I bought this last year after a neighbor tried it and really had good luck with it in hot weather. I bought it from Henry Fields last fall when they had their fall sale. It has far exceeded my expectations.
