Prepared

Nice winter we're having this spring. My daffodills still haven't opened and now they are predicting up to another foot of heavy wet snow on top of them. Predictions are for a heavy wet snow with power outages probable. O Wise One again cleans out stalls and applies clean straw bedding for the goats and rabbits and makes sure he has plenty of hay and grain ready in anticipation of this upcoming storm.

This morning I have a loaf of bread rising and have sent hubby to pick up a half gallon of milk in case we can't get in for a couple days. I always have canned milk and powdered milk for emergencies though. Same with powdered butter and cheese. I put on a big pot of spaghetti sauce and made sure all the laundry was done. Made sure I had some stored water also for that freezing pipes scenario.

People ask me all the time if I am a prepper. My standard answer is no not necessarily in the traditional sense that most think of. I don't think much about alien invasions, comets, zombies or world pandemics. I am a firm believer in being prepared for life and it's little surprises though as I think they are much more likely and common. That unplanned for storm, tornado, hurricane, illness, or unemployment can sure put a kink in one's life plans fast.

So I took some frozen stuffed shells from the freezer and venison Italian sausage.

Add some spaghetti sauce and a little mozzarella cheese and that's a meal. Plenty of veggie sides in the fridge and some garlic bread rising.  I have 2 quarts of extra sauce that can be used for venison meatball subs, Italian sausage subs or just plain old spaghetti. Sauce is easily frozen until needed and easily warmed. I also took out a container of freezer slaw  to defrost

Some muffins full of grated sweet potato, pineapple zucchini, raisins and pecans.

A little cream cheese icing to finish them off.

And a pineapple upside down cake to half with the neighbor.

Baby O went to the library yesterday and stocked up on books for us all. And I always have plenty of cleaning projects going this time of year to keep everyone not necessarily happy but busy. For this weekend all the light fixtures taken down and the bugs cleaned out and then the fixtures washed. We have 3 Netflix DVD's upstairs to watch so at this point let it snow. Just more quilting time for me.

Hope everyone has a warm, safe and happy weekend and see you on the other side of this storm.

Blessings from The Holler

  1. Funny how when you live on a farm being "prepared" is just a normal part of life. When I was kid I never remember my grandparents worrying about the threat of a storm as far as things like food and stuff. Now obviously hurricanes required a little prep to secure things and make sure the animals were safe.

    1. I think that when you live where the sidewalk ends that you have to be prepared. A gallon of milk is not half a block away. Being prepared is just part of the normal cycle and lifestyle on a farm.

  2. I don't know about you, but I am so tired of this weather. We are like you as far as having stuff on hand for those "life" moments that come up. When I had my heart attack a little over a year ago, I was unable to work. Thankfully, my stockpile of food and laundry detergent came in handy. The only things that we needed to buy were milk, bread, and fresh fruits and veggies. Those stockpiles carried us through until I was able to get back to work.

    1. There have been many times through the years that my stockpile has gotten me through a rough spot.

This is where we are, too. I don't like to call myself a prepper because of all the extreme connotations it brings to mind.

It's been snowing here (just of Kansas City for about 7 hours, but still not much accumulation. It will be interesting to see how it all plays out this time around.

  5. I thought being prepared was a way of life.

I bet many people never think to "draw" extra water before a storm or make sure there are candles, matches, lanterns and flashlights.

I think we were blessed to be raised by loving people that taught us how to be prepared.

Snuggle in, stay warm and maybe the weather man will miss it. Look on the bright side, any moisture shall be a plus after last year's dry spell.

  6. I agree about being prepared for life's storms is a way of life as opposed to the newer prepper mentality.. but obviously, they were never taught this way of life so they have to give it a name..

Your pineapple upside down cake looks & sounds fabulous! Im gonna have to make one before long..

Keep warm & I hope & pray it doesnt take your power out..
