Visitors

We have new visitors in the farmyard. Pheasants have been paying a visit to the yard every morning. So far two roosters and a hen.

These are the first wild pheasant we have seen in all these years living here.

    1. It would be nice to see a reestablished colony of pheasant on the land but that will take years.

  3. We see more of the wild turkeys than in the years past. It makes me wonder if there are more of them or it there is just less habitat left in neighboring properties. I know with the drought the water availability has changed for the wild life also. We still hear plenty of coyote so their predators are still out there.

    1. We actually have seen less wild turkey than usual. The last 2 springs were cool and rainy which usually means a low chick mortality rate. Added to that the stresses of an extremely dry and drought laden summer and fall this year and it seems the flocks are much smaller.

  4. Years ago a tornado swept through our county, coming close to a little farm that had just invested in hundreds of baby pheasants~ needless to say, the surrounding township has had a high pheasant quota since then. They have been thick in our snow-covered corn fields the last couple of weeks, thrilling the kids and dog to no end:)

  5. I haven't seen a pheasant in the wild since I was a kid. I know they are out there but there is not many. Even though they are not a native species, they are naturalized. Fascinating birds!!
