A Shopping Excursion

The other day I talked about going to check out the new Amish Grocery not far from my house. Well I made it finally and I was not disappointed. Oh my !! They had lots of bulk spices, household goods and hard to find items such as seasoning salts and such for meats. In the past for meat cures we have had to either travel two hours to Kansas City or order it online and pay shipping. See those little soup noodles in the picture above they are so hard to find locally. They had some dishpans that I am definitely going to have to save my pennies and stock up on, stainless steel no less. And homemade baskets and oil lamps to drool over. Next time I will bring my camera and ask permission to take pictures of the merchandise only for you. Maybe they will let me.

I think I am going to be their best customer : )

  1. I hope they let you take pictures! The Hutterites here seem to shop in the small town stores, but I should ask around and see if they have their own grocery store as well. Thanks for the inspiration!

    1. Many times they are a great source of hard to find farm items.

  2. We have a Pennsylvania Dutch store like that here, that is run by Mennonites. I absolutely adore the store. And you are right, it is next to impossible to find those little tiny soup noodles. But I can always find them there!

  7. Sweet! Shopping at Amish stores can get you into trouble :-)
There are just so many things you just want to buy. Sorry,I just can't help myself. I'm
so....so jealous you have a store relatively close to you.

    1. You are so right it can get me into trouble. I came home to make a list of the spices I am low on or that I don't grow myself. Fred has a birthday next month and I think maybe a homemade basket is the perfect gift or maybe an oil lamp.

  9. We've got the 4th largest Amish community about 30 miles away from us and I love to take short trips to Mesopotamia to the Store at the End of the Commons. Its really wonderful and is full of all sorts of goodies including those bulk items. We've spent many a buck in there over the years.. Its also one of our favorite motorcycle destinations in the fall too.. the ride is gorgeous.
Unfortunately, the place is getting bigger & bigger. They've built on to the store, making it more & more commercial. While its ok in one respect, in another Im not fond of it.. They still have all the wonderful goods and many of the Amish here have their own mini-stores on their own properties where you can get great deals on all sorts of goods including organically grown veggies.

I've got my eye on a few fermenting crocks they have.. This is probably the year!

    1. We have a town about 45 minutes away that has a large population of Amish shops. As it became more popular with the tourists their prices also reflect that. As that happens those hard to find items become less feasible. I don't mind paying a fair price but I will not be gouged.

    1. On Hwy 65 between Carollton and Tina, MO. Carrolton has a growing population of Amish and Mennonite but this is the first store that I have seen open. This family also has a greenhouse and sells plants, bakery items and homemade baskets. Down the road there is an excellent produce stand that is open during the growing season. Past Carrolton across the MO river there is a big apple and peach orchard outside Waverly I think. They sell to the public during harvest. There are also lots of shops around the Jamesport area but I find them a bit pricey at times.

  11. We've recently purchased a small piece of property in Southern Indiana. While looking for various resources in the area, I found this website http://amishamerica.com/. When I searched, I found several stores within an hours drive. We're looking forward to exploring our new neighborhood once the weather settles down.

Love your blog. It's inspiring this city girl to do things I haven't done in years like can. It's also making me want to try my hand at a lot of new things. Thank you so much for sharing your life with us.

  12. I love the Amish and Mennonite stores like that. The closest one to us is 1.5 hours drive one way. We were in the area today and I stopped in to pick up some spices and a few other things that normally I can only find there.

    1. Forgot to say that a basket or an oil lamp would make a very nice gift for Baby O. :)
