For those of you that have been around since the beginning of my blog, and even the newcomers may remember the references to Sadie the Wonder Pup. Two years ago she came into our lives as a gift from our oldest daughter " Fred". From a litter of pups from Fred's neighbors Lab and her sister in law's Vizsla. At 8 weeks old we lost our heart to this bundle of energy who managed to stay in some kind of mischief always.
She slept in a box under the stairs and terrorized the entire farm and we adored her.
Very early in her life she had suffered an accident being hit by the four wheeler and had never come into heat. Therefore unlike all the other dogs she was not spayed or neutered. For two years everything was fine. Unfortunately 60 days ago a coyote dog came through and managed to breed her. We will not go into the details but both the vet and I were under the assumption that she was unable to conceive. We were wrong.
O Wise One rushed Sadie to the vet about daylight Monday morning with contractions. Sadie passed away around noon with complications of birth. Seven puppies followed her in death.
We will lay her to rest today on the farm she spent her whole life on, under her favorite shade tree. It is indeed a sad day here and we are all in shock. Saturday she spent all day with me in the gardens. At my side as I hauled tomato cages to storage and raked leaves. She never even grunted and seemed like the healthiest dog around. The vet could not believe it and said she should have been dead days ago. That's our Sadie the Wonder Pup!
As we mourn Sadie's passing we would like to say that she did not die in vain. Her organs had failed one by one and the puppies had died. But miracle of all miracles he managed to find two puppies alive. How only God knows. Two beautiful perfect living puppies. A boy and a girl. According to the vet these two puppies should not be alive, he is amazed. They are indeed Sadie's two little miracle gifts to us.
We spent last night feeding them every two hours by bottle as we cried for the loss of their mother. We have never raised puppies from birth like this but we will give it our best shot.
Please say a little prayer for our little miracle pups as we struggle to keep them alive.

I am so sorry to read of Sadie's passing. I can only imagine your heartbreak and my prayers are with you. What a wonderful blessing she left you! Truly a miracle and a special gift.
ReplyDeleteI am so sorry for your loss of your dear friend. What a bitter sweet moment it must be caring for the new pups. So glad to hear you have two blessings to help you through your sadness.
ReplyDeleteBlessings,
Farmlife Chick
So heartbreaking. I know the pain of losing a beloved dog. Here's praying the Lord will help you with caring for the pups.
ReplyDeleteSorry for your loss. I don't think you'll have any trouble raising them, and look forward to the puppy tales from next spring and summer.
ReplyDeleteI'm not seeing the coyote in them, but I'm eager to see how this mix turns out!
ReplyDeleteBest of luck with the pups.
So, so sad. I cannot imagine what you are going through. God sure does work in strange ways and Sadie is in a better place. I am praying for those two little pups that they will grow strong and will be the next generation wonder dogs.
ReplyDeleteI am so sorry to hear of your loss of Sadie..you both are amazing and I know if anyone that can raise these two little ones, it would be you. My heart and prayers go out to you both..just remember..when one door closes another one opens....love to you both..vera
ReplyDeleteI am so sorry. Please know that we understand your pain and share your tears. Now about those babies: for some reason (only God knows why!) babies seem to gravitate to me. Over the past few years I have raised baby birds(no feathers, bald little things) that get fed every 10 minutes, baby kittens, and this year a baby red squirrel, eyes still closed. Most lived, the wild ones going back out where they belong. I found the internet to be full of helpful advice, added to my own farmwife common sense. Good luck with those babes. Having coyote in them means they should be a bit more hardy than the average pup. Here in NY you would not be allowed to keep them since wild coydogs have been huge problem, but I think that so long as they are spay/neutered and kept contained most likely your area would allow it? Just something to consider and your wildlife officer could give you more info if they survive..Our kind and knowledgeable officers have been like members of the family, thanks to non farming neighbors who call them to report us for such "serious" crimes as having 2 of our pigs get loose!!(and this is farm country, very rural, but ignorance knows know limits I guess) Oh, I keep my cool weather babes on a heating pad that I turn on/off throughout the day and night. Feeding with a medicine dropper worked better for me than a bottle, and who can resist giving them those momma type cuddles! (((hugs))
ReplyDeleteblind ole' me, just saw your heating pad. do you have any particularly sweet cats? after hissing for a bit, my sweeter one will settle in with new babies to groom them. I remember reading you did not have cats due to the coyotes (some cats like to foster anything and everything), but some nearby dog rescues or the pound may have a momma dog who lost her litter and may be available for fostering. even if the milk is dried up, the care would be nice and give you a break. just an idea. (the life you save with an adopted momma may turn out to be your next great family dog.)

I am soo sorry for your loss of sweet Sadie and the other pups! We had a Vizsla from my uncle who bred them ! I know that wolves and coyotes will breed with dogs on farms as I have had what they call now a hybrid, part dog, part wolf ! I will be praying these little ones will be fine and we will be able to read posts and see photos of these little bundles of hybrid joy !
ReplyDeleteWhat a beautiful gift through such a sad tragedy. Sending hugs your way, Momma Hooch. We raised a day old pup a couple of years ago, and she did wonderful on goat's milk. We started using the tube of a syringe (no needle) to give her mere ounces at a time, and then around two weeks we switched to a puppy bottle. She turned out to be a very spoiled dog! If you were closer I'd borrow out Lady to take care of them:)) Hope your new little babies thrive~ they'll help heal your hurting hearts.
ReplyDeleteI am sorry for your loss but in that you have gained something you never imagined.
ReplyDeleteI am so sorry to hear about your sweet puppy, how tragic! I hope the pups do well and we will be seeing more of them as they grow.
ReplyDeleteI'm so sorry! I can only imagine your grief.
ReplyDeleteYou can succeed in raising those puppies. My cat, Patience, was orphaned at three days of age and I bottle fed her until she weaned herself at about three months of age. She is now seven years old and ornery as can be. I raised her on KMR from the pet store. They make one for puppies, too. I'm sure your vet has already fixed you up with the ideal puppy formula, though.

ReplyDeleteGod bless. ♥
How heartbreaking - what a loss. I hope her sweet babies thrive.
ReplyDeleteWords cannot express how very sorry I am for you loss...I can't even imagine the roller coaster ride of emotions you must have experienced. You will be in my thoughts and prayers as you grieve the loss of your beloved "family" member, and even more prayers for the two little miracles left behind. -- Lori
ReplyDeleteI am so sorry. I too had a Sadie that was my pride and joy. I had to put her down exactly a year ago and life has never been the same. I undertand your sorrow and send you my love. Take care of her babies, she would be happy.
