Enriching The Soil

Even though the gardening season is almost over we never stop working on the soil.

Remember those field peas that were planted close beside the potato plants that were dying back in the late summer heat. Shading the potatoes and also shading out the weeds. And because they are a legume fixing nitrogen in the soil. 

With the potatoes now dug and the field peas blooming it was time for the field peas to do their job!

So O Wise One cranked up the little green tractor and disked the peas into the soil.

With rain in the forecast for this weekend he wanted to get them chopped and worked into the soil before the rain. 

Once it gets a rain on it then we will throw out some gypsum pellets to help break up any clay pockets and improve the soil tilth. And for the next two to three months before winter sets in we will continue to add organic matter into the top of this area. Things such as pea pods and straw from the animal bedding and even rabbit and goat manure from their pens. 


Next year will be our third growing season in this garden and every year seems to improve. Maybe next year we will actually have rainfall.
