Meat..Every year about this time we buy two piglets. These cost us $35 each. We raise them off the garden scraps and windfall fruit and culls. We may supplement a little grain and we get the throw aways from a neighbor who runs several stands at farmers markets in the city(Kansas City). Between the two farms we feed the pigs and at the end of garden/market season we each have a pig to butcher. Very little grain output and very lean meat. I think this year we are even going to attempt to butcher it ourselves.
I'm in love! When I was a child my family ran a slaughter house. I would cry every year when we slaughtered a calf for the freezer. I cannot touch an animal let alone care for one then kill it. I know I know I'd never make it as a real farmer.
